sliding doors

19 Mar

James: What are you doing two weeks on Saturday?
Helen: Probably killing myself.
James: Excellent. What time does that finish? Do you like boats?

I think I’ve just accidentally discovered my fave romantic move. (Since I have the memory of a gold fish that statement should be taken cum grano salis.)

It’s witty (the British sort of humor, the best kind; ), it’s bitter and sad (u r guaranteed to well up a couple of times), and yet warm and heart-opening and funny  and it makes you think of things. It’s called Sliding Doors (1998) and…well, I like it. It has a double ending and actually it’s almost as if you are watching two movies at the same time.

It has a bit of everything, including a recurring reference to Monty Python (all hail!) and Dido playing during the closing credits.
Go see.

P.S. I heart John Hannah. (I’m such a goose, I know)

E, daca face trimitere la Monty Python, tb, vazut neaparat.

Exista cuvantul “romantic” in dictionarul tau personal??? As fi bagat mana in foc ca… :P

and, hell, yes, today Helen’s line is my religion.

altfel spus, sa nu te uiti la ‘Knight and Day’, ultimul film cu Tom Cruise si Cameron Diaz. ;-) se vrea un fel de romantic action film, dar reuseste sa se joace cu pattern-ul hollywoodian al romance-ului intr-un fel care este revoltator. nu stiu daca l-ai vazut, dar mie mi-a dat impresia de remake of video games. of course, Cruise is the hero, undefeatable. Feministele cred ca au sarit pe regizor dupa filmul asta, and they have their point. degeaba o da la intors finalul, nu m-a convins.
anyway, it is a must not see. :))

Then, move to Blue, din Trilogia culorilor. You can skip The Double Life of Veronica, but watch Blind Chance if you like Sliding Doors.

:) si cred ca nici nu prea avem cum sa scapam dat fiind ca the recurrence of romantic plots in films, ads, etc represents our constant longing for utopia. asta spun multe studii sociologice. nicely put, isn’t it? :)
so, just as in your other post: ‘you can check out anytime you like but you can….’ :))

okay, time to go read stuff.

PS constant longing for utopia – nicely put indeed!

    :)
